What Makes Partner Therapy Different with an Athlete Involved?

At the heart of any successful relationship is mutual respect, shared values, and an open, vulnerable style of communication that works for those involved. When working with relationships where one, or more, athletes are involved, there are unique challenges that arise in the system that require a deft hand, and holistic understanding of what it is like to be an elite athlete and what its like to support an elite athlete.

My approach to working with athlete partnerships is grounded in the framework of ethical non-monogamy. Though this may seem odd, if we conceptualize sport as an additional intimate relationship, we can create boundaries, establish expectations, and develop communication strategies that encourage understanding, vulnerable expression, and safety within the relationship.  This work can result in developing compersion, the feeling of joy for our partner's joy.

I approach relationship help and marital counseling focusing on keeping the work partner-centered and unique to each individual case.

There are also times when Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy may be a beneficial treatment for the partners if other treatments have proven ineffective.

I am a sex-positive therapist who is welcoming of all gender expressions and relationship models.  I provide both in person and online relationship counseling.
